Our Roots
Carolina Furniture Direct’s rich history started as the “Helms Boys” in 1968. Their family-owned furniture store located in Bluefield, WV was started by Larry Helms with his two sons, Jerry and Wayne. Relying on his success as an appliance salesman, Larry’s store provided the town with a much needed service. Still today, residents of Bluefield own Helms Boys classic furniture pieces and remember the store fondly.
In 1984, the family relocated to Raleigh, NC and opened Carolina Sofa. Located on Glenwood Avenue’s bustling furniture row, Carolina Sofa, Leather, Dinette, and Kids quickly grew to several stores, located across multiple states and Jerry’s son Mark joined the team. They became widely known for their high quality products, fair pricing, and exceptional customer service.
In May, 2009, Carolina Sofa entered a partnership with Klaussner Furniture to open a brick and mortar location to showcase their custom-made local products. A Glenwood Avenue mainstay, Klaussner Raleigh not only showed their namesake’s products, but also sold contemporary pieces from some of the area’s best manufacturers.
With the unfortunate closing of the Klausner Factory in August, 2023, the Helms family looked to return to their roots. Carolina Furniture Direct is the newest iteration of this 60+ year family business. Jerry and Mark Helms have worked to create a unique showroom, showcasing the finest pieces from multiple factories, many of which are located right here in North Carolina. Located at 8401 Glenwood Avenue, our established sales team will guide you in selecting the best custom and ready-made pieces for your home or office.
